As the composition of employment varies across states, so to will the overall economic performance. States with a relatively high percentage of jobs in a cyclical industry such as manufacturing, for example, may be more likely to experience periods of growth or contraction of greater magnitude than the nation. Employment and Income Description: Employment growth shows the rate at which net new nonagricultural jobs are being created within the selected geography. The underlying data reflect a tabulation of the number of jobs by industry in a particular state. Multiple jobholders are counted once for each job held. Employment data are based on the state where the worker is employed and not on the worker's state of residence. Total employment is broken down into three categories:

Description: Personal income is defined as the income received by, or on the behalf of, all residents of a state. It consists of the income received by persons from all sources - that is, from participation in production and from both government and business transfer payments. Wages and salaries are the largest single component of personal income and are defined as the monetary remuneration of employees before deductions such as social security contributions or union dues. Nonwage income includes all sources of personal income except wages and salaries. Nonwage income includes farm and nonfarm proprietors' income, dividend, interest and rental income, transfer income such as workers' compensation, and other adjustments to income to account for commuting flows across state borders. Average Annual Wages and Salaries Description: Average annual wages and salaries is the average total compensation per worker in each of the major nonagricultural sectors of the economy. Since wages and salaries by industry differ, the mix of industry employment across states can result in different rates of overall income growth. Also, the overall level of income will be determined, in part, by the mix of high wage versus low wage jobs in a state. Real Estate Activity Description: Housing permits data reflects the planned construction of private residential buildings. Issuance of a permit does not necessarily mean that construction will take place. It is the authorization to build given by local permit issuing officials. Buildings such as hotels, nursing homes, dormitories and mobile homes are excluded. Permits are categorized as either single-family or multi-family. Housing permit data is heavily influenced by seasonal patterns. For this reason, it is often analyzed on a year-to-date basis. The data can be compared to the year-to-date level of permits from the previous year.
