Tapping the Unbanked Market – Symposium Materials

Symposium Binder: A hardcopy folder containing the Chairman’s Message, a FDIC profile of the Unbanked; a description of Panelists and Speakers, and their presentations; Executive Summaries; Articles by Panelists and Speakers; References and Related Readings on the unbanked and more.

A New Opportunity … The Unbanked: a 10-minute FDIC video that premiered at the symposium.

The video brings the human face to the issue of the unbanked. A variety of people, both unbanked and recently banked, discuss the difficulties they had/have while being unbanked, as well as the advantages they see to becoming part of the financial mainstream. FDIC Chairman Donald E. Powell appears briefly at the beginning of the video to introduce the issue of the unbanked and at the end in a call to action stressing that the unbanked are an opportunity. The video also includes a more statistical discussion of the issue, as well as a discussion of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) programs and how this combination benefits the unbanked, banks, and their communities.
